Headlight Housing
The various types of the headlight housing
Not many people understand that when they need to change the headlight bulb, they also need to change the housing. And this often causes an issue when the bills arrive, and it's higher than expected.
This misunderstanding stems from the fact that most people need to learn there are different types. Each type caters to different types of usage, and of course, it gives different light.
Why a headlamp needs a housing?
The housing covers multiple functions. Primarily, it's there to hold the bulb and all of the necessary wiring. The housing connects the bulb and all wires to the rest of the vehicle.
The secondary function is to protect the bulb and other components from heat, humidity, and dirt. That is why most manufacturers use thermoplastics to build the headlight housing. But most importantly, it is there to protect the bulbs and make your drive even more comfortable.
Types of Housing
Did you know that there used to be only one type of headlight housing? But with technology, now there are two types. Some people even believe there are three housing types, as they include a converter. Keep in mind that each housing has different pros and cons. And the best one is the one that can keep you safe and suit your driving style.
Reflector
This type is the most popular one. It's understandable since the reflector housing has been with the modern vehicle since the very beginning. The model barely changes, but with technology, you can expect more variants and lights from this housing.
In this type, the bulb is in an enclosed bowl, and mirrors in the housing reflect the light. The original design used to have glass inside the bulb casing. This causes multiple issues, such as yellowing glass and the inability to replace the bulb easily. At that time, when you need to replace the bulb, you have to replace the housing as well.
It was in the 1980s that car manufacturers switched to mirrors inside the housing. The change makes care more affordable since you only need to replace the bulbs.
Projector
This housing type started as the common housing for luxury cars. It also has a bulb in a steel bowl like the reflector. But it has a lens to amplify the light and a shield to direct the beam.
When should I change the housing?
If you properly take care of your vehicle, you may not have to change the housing. It's one of the components that is built to last. But if you want to change your headlight from reflector to projector or vice versa, you may need to change the housing. The difference may be minimal, but it can largely impact your driving style.
Now you know more about the headlight housings. Do you know what type your vehicle has? Is it reflective or the projector? You can tell from how the light shines on the road. If your car is a new model, it most likely has projector housing.
