What are the BMW TMS Modules

In short, the TMS module controls the headlamps. You can set how high or low the light is. And the module also will automatically turn the light to the direction you're driving. Whether it's right or left, the steering wheel connected to the vehicle's main computer notifies the modules.

This module is also responsible for giving you warning signs on the dashboard. You will see if there is any communication failure resulting in the lights not working as it should, including when there is any short circuit in the headlamps or blinkers.

How to Check if your BMW has an adaptive headlight

Several common issues

Even though it all sounds good, the system is not immune to some issues. You may find cases of module failures. This seemingly trivial issue can affect you greatly, especially when you park. Now, let's take a look at which components that are likely to cause the issue

Whenever you clean or change the bulb, you must remember to keep the seal on the access door closed. Water can seep in easily when you fail to do so. And the result is a short circuit or something worse.

• adaptive headlight failure

Mechanics have different names with this module. Some call them ALC for Adaptive Light Control or SMC for Steeper Motor Controller. When there is an issue with the module, you will see the adaptive failure notification on your dashboard.

Again, the common cause is water. It can happen when driving in the rain or going to an automatic car wash.

• Steeper motor

A steeper is a component that turns the light when you corner. After a while, the steeper motor can be worn out. This can cause an issue since the module will not recognize any response from the component.

Can I fix the issues myself?

As you can see, water is a common denominator in this problem. It's understandable since water and electricity are not a good combination. You can fix some of the issues, given you have some mechanical skills. But if you don't, it's best to leave it to the professionals.
